Function of the district heat exchanger

A district heating system consists of two separate circuits that meet in a heat exchanger made of thin plates of thermally conductive metal. The heat transfer takes place when the water from the primary side passes on one side of the plates and from the secondary side on the other side of the plates.

Measuring efficiency

To measure the efficiency of a district heating heat exchanger, one measures the Delta T between the primary and secondary return temperatures. Optimal heat transfer corresponds to a Delta T of zero degrees; as Delta T increases, efficiency decreases. It is therefore important that the metal surfaces in the heat exchangers are clean!
