Concentration of coolant liquid
When a ground source heat pump is installed, there should be information on the type of fluid, its concentration and quantity, as well as maintenance instructions. Unfortunately, a common error is that the concentration of the brine fluid is too low.
When the concentration is too low, there is a risk of ice plugs forming in the evaporator, which can lead to compressor failure. Therefore, one of the things to do is to check the concentration of the refrigerant liquid at regular intervals.
Here are some other checks that are important to do on a regular basis regarding the refrigerant to avoid problems.
- Filter cleaning - if the filter is clogged, the flow rate is reduced and the risk of ice formation in the evaporator increases.
- Antifreeze setting - check that the heat pump is set to the correct value in relation to the concentration of the brine.
- Refrigerant sensor - if the sensor shows the wrong value, the antifreeze is not working properly and the evaporator may freeze up.
- Leakage of refrigerant fluid - make a habit of checking the connections and insulation around the refrigerant pipes.
NOTE! There are different degrees of toxicity for different types of refrigerant fluids and they should not be discharged down the drain. Check with the environmental office in your municipality what the rules are.
